Hey guys, hope you’re all having a great day!
I thought I’d share with you guys my book haul for this month. I love doing book hauls and am amazed this is only my second one. I want to do more book content. I got all, except one, from various op-shops. Looking at them I think I have assembled a nice range, a few purchases to add to my never-ending and never dwindling TBR list. If anything it just grows bigger and bigger but hey you can’t pass up a bargain! Or at least that’s what I tell myself…
Poison Princess (The Arcana Chronicles) by Kresley Cole
Pages: 369 pgs
This intrigued me. It’s the first book out of six, possible 7?, in the series (WOW). I don’t have many apocalyptic stories on my shelf, so I thought I’d give this ago. It sounds like it would be a good mixture of action and romance. On Audible it seemed to be a praised book and on Goodreads it has an average rating of 4/5 stars. I skimmed through ratings quickly and it seems like people have either loved it! or gave it 1 star, saw very little ratings in-between. I RARELY dislike a book so I feel like I will enjoy this otherwise I’d be very surprised. I think I’m easily pleased haha.
It makes me feel excited to read this book but don’t want to have too high of expectations just in case. Sometimes having too high of an expectation can ruin it even if it’s a great book. Definitely eager to read.
Matched by Ally Condie
Pages: 366 pgs
I’ve seen this book pop up lots of times so I thought I’d give this a try. It’s the first book in the trilogy. I don’t know a whole lot about the series but it has a dystopian setting. It’s based on society controlling your life and at the age of seventeen years old they will match you with your ‘soul mate’ or ‘life partner’, however you want to say it. To be honest it kinda sounds like Divergent but instead of choosing your factions it’s about who you’ll spend the rest of your life with. I was curious about learning more on Goodreads, my go to, and some people were left disappointed and talked about love triangles (that’s all mentioned I didn’t want to read any spoilers). Love triangles are something I don’t particularly enjoy reading. When I see it mentioned or implied in the blurb I normally put down the book. I don’t mind a little bit of drama but sometimes it can just get too much with the drama and I just stop reading ‘cos it becomes a mess.
The blurb sounds really good and has definitely caught my attention. I’ll still give this a go and start it with an open mind as I could be surprised and end up loving it!
Black by Fleur Ferris
Pages: 276 pgs
This novel is a thriller, mystery revolved around a girl named Ebony ‘Black’ Marshall who is supposedly cursed. Everyone who’s close to her has died or has been critically injured. Ebony wants to find out the cause behind what is happening that makes everyone believed she is cursed. So this genre is something new that I don’t read often but it interested me. The cover and the whole atmosphere with the misty forest and aesthetic is want drew me in. I love the cover and hope the book is just as good.
The Falconer by Elizabeth May
Pages: 378 pgs
This novel is set in Edinburgh in 1844. I’m sold already. I picked it up and bought it. The cover is so pretty! I’m a sucker for a gorgeous cover. I know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover but you can’t deny a good cover, it does add to the book. A strong female protagonist named Aileana that is-as said on the cover- a debutante, heiress and murder. Double sold. The Falconer is the first book in the trilogy. She sounds so cool already; a badass fighter, who defies social norms. It contains action, romance and has steampunk vibes which I’m totally down for! One of my favourite buys in the haul.
Enmity by E.J. Andrews
Pages: 295 pgs
This one was a gamble for me. Out of all the books I bought this one was one where I was debating whether to get it or not. As it was only a few dollars I thought there was no harm in trying it.
It’s another dystopian novel. It’s all about good versus evil and surviving. I think the reason why I hesitated in purchasing it was because it seemed too similar to books I have read but then again I don’t know too much about it and it might have its own unique element.
Star-crossed by Frances Kelly & Penny Murray
Pages: 288 pgs
Found this in an op-shop and fell in love with the cover. The blue and gold are one of my fave combos as it gives such a magical vibe. It’s a book full of short stories retelling famous star-crossed romances throughout history, fictional and non-fiction. It contains a good variety. So far I’ve only read the first story which was Orpheus and Eurydice’s tale.
It’s a great book to pick up whenever, the stories aren’t really that long as the short stories are condensed versions of each tale. If you love to read either tragic romances or love to read about forbidden loves. Then this is a nice book for you.
Beauty in the Darkness by Andrew Drake
Pages: 108 pgs
Andrew Drake is from South Australia and- if I’m correct- this is his first book. It’s new and only came out February this year. It’s a poetry book on his experiences of grief, death, torment, love and life. He’s known for slam poetry and has won multiple competitions. I have been reading a lot more modern poetry and this sounds really good and I’m looking forward to starting this.
Hope you guys enjoyed this post! What books have you bought or read recently? Has anyone read any of these books I mentioned? If so, did you enjoy it? Let me know 🙂
Until next time…
